Riconoscibile, come scrive il MIR, dai carlini napoletani per il segno della sferza, che identificava lo zecchiere Domenico Ghirardini attivo presso la zecca di Roma. “Trattasi quindi, come scrive la nota al catalogo dell’asta Kunst und Münzen del 1980, di una emissione d’urgenza per sostituire le coniazioni del Senato. Si ricorse all’imitazione dei carlini napoletani perchè quella moneta godeva di grande credito su tutte le piazze.”
