Benito Mussolini, Presidente del Consiglio dei Ministri italiano, e il Cardinale Pietro Gasparri, Segretario di Stato di Papa Pio XI, firmarono i Patti Lateranensi l'11 febbraio 1929. Riconciliarono lo Stato d'Italia con il Vaticano, quasi cinquant'anni dopo la loro rottura e segnò così un passo decisivo nella formazione dell'Italia moderna.
In effetti, fino al 1861, l'Italia non esisteva come stato. Vittorio Emanuele II che fu Re di Piemonte divenne così il primo Re d'Italia, con Torino capitale. Tuttavia, l'unità italiana era ancora incompleta poiché Trentino e Veneto erano ancora austriaci. Soprattutto, lo Stato Pontificio, con Roma capitale storica, era ancora uno stato sovrano.
Il 25 marzo 1861 Cavour dichiarò Roma capitale del Regno d'Italia, per ovvie ragioni storiche. Ma non poteva attaccare Roma poiché lo Stato Pontificio era protetto dalle truppe di Napoleone III, suo alleato.
Una convenzione firmata a Fontainebleau il 15 settembre 1864 tra il Regno d'Italia e il Secondo Impero francese sanciva il ritiro delle truppe francesi, contro l'impegno dell'Italia a non invadere Roma. A suggello di questa rinuncia, l'accordo imponeva Firenze come nuova capitale del giovane regno.
La guerra franco-tedesca del 1870 portò al ritorno in Francia del contingente che proteggeva il Papa e la sua capitale. Alla guida di 50.000 soldati italiani, il generale Cadorna bombardò le mura di Roma, che capitolò il 20 settembre.3
Papa Pio IX si rifugiò in Vaticano e Roma divenne ufficialmente capitale d'Italia il 3 febbraio 1871.
Nonostante il parlamento italiano offrisse al Papa territori e due miliardi di sterline di risarcimento, il Pontefice rifiutò ogni accordo, ritenendosi "prigioniero" in Vaticano. I suoi successori adottano la stessa posizione di vittime.
Il trionfo di Mussolini e la sua marcia su Roma nel 1922 migliorarono i rapporti tra Chiesa e Stato. In effetti, le idee conservatrici del fascismo facevano appello alla Chiesa; Mussolini, ad esempio, introdusse l'educazione cattolica nelle scuole.
Sette anni dopo, questa concordanza di interessi (il dittatore aveva bisogno dell'appoggio dei cattolici) portò ai Patti Lateranensi. Elenchiamone i punti principali:/Il papa divenne signore della Città del Vaticano, territorio del Regno d'Italia ufficialmente ceduto alla Chiesa. L'Italia a garanzia della sua sicurezza.
Lo Stato italiano pagò finalmente alla Chiesa le indennità offerte nel 1871, più gli interessi, che ammontarono a quattro miliardi di lire.
La religione cattolica divenne religione di stato.
Per celebrare l'evento, una medaglia monumentale è stata coniata dagli stabilimenti The Stefano Johnson di Milano. Basato sui disegni di Ludovico Poliaghi, è stato inciso da Enrico Farè.
